Motorists in the city, who have been fined for not carrying certificates related to their vehicles, can choose to drive light from now on as they will be allowed to produced the documents in electronic form too.

The draft notification by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways released on November 2 has brought certain amendments and a new clause to the Central Motor Vehicle Rules which exempts vehicle owners from showing the physical documents.

One of the officials, who did not want to be identified, said, “The procedure will be as follows: The commuter or the motor vehicle owner can produce the documents such as registration, driving license, insurance and other details from their digi locker. There is no need to check the physical documents. The city police have to be informed in this matter and the rule can be implemented.”

P Harishekharan, Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic), told BM, “Yes, I have come across the notification. We will be implementing it soon. There is still time for us to implement it. We will spread awareness and educate traffic cops in the matter and then we will start implementation early next year.”
