
Ashakiranam is a cancer care campaign spear-headed by Caritas India, (Caritas India, is the official development arm of the Catholic Churches in India) launched in Kerala with the objectives of fighting cancer, preventing and reducing cancer and extending palliative care and counseling, supporting financially, liaisoning with the government to get cancer affected pension and best treatment. The programme is running in the diocese since five years.
The Ashakiranam Programme was launched in the diocese of Vijayapuram on 2016 May 30. The Ashakiranam resource team handpicked volunteers from different parts of the diocese, with outstanding leadership, motivation & training capacities. These key volunteers gathered every quarter for Training of Trainers sessions. An action plan was formulated by the core Ashakiranam Team in the diocese, which enlisted activities to be undertaken in the field. The Resource Team was expanded and were taught how to orient & train volunteers to implement Ashakiranam activities successfully. They also share their field level experiences and help conceptualize future Ashakiranam activities. The volunteers visit homes of cancer patients to offer palliative care and counseling. They also mobilize resources, by organizing various programmes as collecting and selling old newspapers and Acri materials, organizing snack centers, organizing public resources, mobilization campaign, dumb box collection etc.
We are conducting cancer survey in our target area to identifying existing cancer patients who need support.
We conduct awareness classes in the target areas. Medical camps will be conducted in collaborates with the hospital area.
We promote a wide variety of pesticide-free organic farming in the houses under the parishes and also in those which are not too, by means of awareness classes and motivational classes.
We promote healthy life style methods and…… among you by introducing events such as yoga classes, awareness classes and meditation sessions.
We have about 600 volunteers all around Kottayam and Munnar region. These volunteers will be trained on tracking the cancer patients and provide them help by mobilizing funds and other kinds of primary support.
