Panchakarma is a bio cleaning regimen intended to eliminate the toxic elements from the body and thereby enhance the quality of life. Panchakarma presents a unique approach of Ayurveda with specially designed five procedures of internal purification of the body. It is a procedure in which Utklista doshas (humours) are expelled out through the nearest route after Snehana and Swedana. It is a curative line of treatment for all diseases which are not amenable to Shamana Chikitsa. The panchakarmas explained in ayurvedic classics are Vamana, Virechana, Basti, Nasya and Raktamokshana. Panchakarma can also be administered in Swastha (healthy individual) as a preventive measure. Besides the application in the treatment of disease, they are also used as preparatory measures before surgery and before administration of Rasayana (rejuvenation therapy).
