Oliver Twist is a widely known novel of Charles Dickens, the greatest of all English novelists. The novel is remarkable for its clarity of purpose and its sustained intensity. It aims at correcting the glamorous picture of criminals and at attacking the crude inhumanity of the New Poor Law of 1834. Oliver Twist is an enticing and powerful story of crime, poverty, callousness, oppression and exploitation. Oliver was born and brought up in a workhouse and apprenticed to a cruel master. He fled to London and taken to the den of Fagin, a master criminal. In the whole novel, Oliver's morality prevailed upon him and he remains an innocent, virtuous boy.
