Government Medical College, Kottayam, the third medical college established in Kerala, has been a beacon of medical education and healthcare since its inception in 1962. Additionally, the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department facilitated the birth of Kerala's first test tube baby, and the Surgical Gastroenterology Department performed the first government sector liver transplant in 2022. The college also established India's first multidisciplinary Transgender Clinic in a government sector in 2017 and leads in Tertiary Care Palliative Services and Cardiac Rehabilitation Services in Kerala.
