Government Medical College, Kottayam, the third medical college established in Kerala, has been a beacon of medical education and healthcare since its inception in 1962. Situated on a sprawling 265-acre campus across Arpookkara, Athirampuzha, and Kottayam municipality, the institution serves as a crucial tertiary care hospital for five districts, including Kottayam, Idukki, Alappuzha, Pathanamthitta, and Ernakulam. Known for its significant role in providing healthcare to lakhs of pilgrims visiting Sabarimala temple and being in proximity to the renowned tourist destination Kumarakom, the college boasts a 2094-bed hospital. The institution handles a substantial patient load, with approximately 3000 out-patients and over 500 emergency visits daily, along with treating more than one lakh in-patients annually. The college offers comprehensive academic programs with an annual intake of 175 medical undergraduates, 142 postgraduates, and 196 students in pharmacy and para-medical courses, supported by a dedicated team of 327 teaching faculty and over 1550 staff members.
Over its sixty years of growth, Government Medical College, Kottayam, has emerged as a top-graded academic institution and a trusted healthcare center in Central Kerala. It holds the esteemed designation of the Regional Medical Education Center of the National Medical Commission. The college's clinical departments are noted for their excellence in both general and specialized medical care. The institution has achieved remarkable milestones, including performing the highest number of primary angioplasty procedures in India by its Cardiology Department, and pioneering heart transplants in government sector medical colleges. Additionally, the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department facilitated the birth of Kerala's first test tube baby, and the Surgical Gastroenterology Department performed the first government sector liver transplant in 2022. The college also established India's first multidisciplinary Transgender Clinic in a government sector in 2017 and leads in Tertiary Care Palliative Services and Cardiac Rehabilitation Services in Kerala.
In recognition of its exceptional contributions, Government Medical College, Kottayam, received the prestigious Arogya Manthan 3.0 national award for the highest number of free treatments under the AYUSHMAN Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Scheme and the Best Performer award for MEDISEP in 2022.
