About Thirunakkara Sree Mahadevar Temple


This is the Temple of Lord Siva. One of the Major Temples in Kerala situated at the heart of KOTTAYAM. This Siva temple was built in the 16th century by Maharaja of Thekkumkoor. The Siva is here with Devi Parvathi, Ganapathy, Bhadra, Ayappan, Murukan and Bhagavathi.

There is 3 anual festivals in Thirunakkara Temple. Main annual festival Phalguna Utsavam, falls in the Malayalam month of Meenam (March/April) and lasts for 10 days. The festival draws to a close with the the ritualistic arattu that includes a procession of caparisoned elephants. Various temple arts and cultural programmes are put on show as part of the festival. The other two festivals of the temple fall in the month of Thulam (October/November) and Mithunam (June/July).

Thirunakkara is the name of an area of Kottayam town in Kerala, India. The place is a hill known as "Nakkara Kunnu" in the regional language Malayalam.

There is a Hindu-temple located on the hill, which is considered to be a sacred hill by Hindus, hence the name "Thiru" + "Nakkara" meaning "Sacred Nakkara Hill".

Thirunakkara Mahadeva temple dedicated to Lord Siva is located at Thirunakkara. The annual ten-day festival at the temple draws to a close with the Aaraattu ceremony.

Usually nine caparisoned elephants take part in the Aaraattu-procession, which begins in the afternoon.

Folk arts like Mayilattom, Velakali etc., are presented in the temple premises in the evening. Another major attraction are the Kathakali-performances during the festival.

Also Thirunakkara is one of the ace shiva temples in the state of Kerala.
