Root Canal Treatment

Root canal treatment, also known as endodontic therapy, is a dental procedure used to treat infection or inflammation within the tooth's pulp—the soft tissue inside the tooth that contains nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue. This treatment is necessary when the pulp becomes infected or inflamed due to deep decay, repeated dental procedures on the tooth, faulty crowns, or a crack or chip in the tooth. Sometimes, even an injury to a tooth may cause pulp damage without visible chips or cracks. The procedure begins with a thorough examination, often including X-rays, to determine the extent of the infection or damage. The dentist then administers local anesthesia to numb the area around the affected tooth, ensuring the patient's comfort throughout the procedure. A small opening is made in the crown of the tooth to access the pulp chamber and root canals. Using specialized instruments, the dentist carefully removes the infected or inflamed pulp tissue, cleans, and shapes the interior of the root canals. Once the canals are cleaned and disinfected, they are filled with a biocompatible material, typically a rubber-like substance called gutta-percha, which is placed with an adhesive cement to ensure complete sealing of the canals. The opening in the tooth is then sealed with a temporary filling. In most cases, a follow-up visit is required to place a crown or other restoration on the tooth to restore its full function and appearance. Root canal treatment not only relieves pain and infection but also helps preserve the natural tooth, preventing the need for extraction and maintaining the patient's overall dental health.
