Who is SolarWinds?

SolarWinds is an IT firm bringing new technologies in the form of products and services as solutions to the table for the ever-expanding IT field. Most notably, many businesses from Fortune 500 to small and medium enterprises use SolarWinds Network Monitoring to manage different tools in a productive way. From governmental organizations to private companies, their clients spread in time.
What happened to SolarWinds?
A series of supply chain attack happened to the clients of SolarWinds tool, through which a breach was made by cybercriminals to gain access to different governmental and private organisations.
When was the first incident on SolarWinds cyberattack reported?
The time period of the cyberattack is not exactly clear. But first, it was reported on the 8th of December last year by FireEye. They have also stated that their Red Team toolkit containing applications used by their licensed ethical hackers was stolen. After a few days, FireEye found a supply chain attack on the investigation of above mentioned Red Team toolkit.
Who is behind these cyberattacks?
A hacker group somehow associated with the Russian Government is behind these attacks. Some cybersecurity experts and federal investigators point at Russia’s Foreign Intelligence called the SVR.
How did they work out the cyberattack?
Like in the case of every technology solutions provider, SolarWinds keeps on updating its tool and software. The cyber attackers have compromised during such an update in SolarWinds Orion. Orion is the name of the SolarWinds Software system which is used by 33,000 customers globally, according to their SEC documents. The cyber attackers inserted a code to the Orion which creates a hidden way to customer’s information technology system. It is believed that almost 18,000 customers have installed this recent update making them vulnerable to the cyberattack.
Who are the victims of this attack?
This is the most shocking of all. The victims include-
1. Departments of US Commerce and Treasury
2. Department of Homeland Security (DHS)
3. National Institute of Health
4.The Energy Department (DOE)
5. National Nuclear Security Administration
6. California Department of State Hospitals
7. Kent University
8. FireEye
9. Microsoft Cisco
10. Deloitte Intel
And other 200 firms who wish to keep their identity unrevealed.
How did it affect Microsoft?

Microsoft reveals permanent work-from-home policy Although Microsoft is a victim of the attack, it has confirmed that the hackers were able to view their source code but were not able to modify or change anything including products, services and emails. The hackers also could not use Microsoft tools according to their deeds. Microsoft has stated that this viewing of source code has taken place through one of their employee accounts.
There is no further knowledge as to which code has been viewed or any changes done to this code.
