DISTINCTION BETWEEN HUB,SWITCH,ROUTER

DISTINCTION BETWEEN HUB,SWITCH,ROUTER

Posted On Nov 17, 2021

The majority of us had no idea what a Hub, Switch, or Router was. There is a naive belief that three of them are comparable. However, the way they manage data differs from one to the next.

The purpose of a hub is to connect all of your devices to an internal network. It contains a number of ethernet ports that allow connections from network devices. It is not considered intelligent because it does not filter any data or have any knowledge of where the data should be transmitted. And a hub only knows when a device is plugged into one of its ports. A data packet is copied to all of the other ports when it arrives at one of the ports. As a result, the data packets are visible to all devices connected to that hub. So, if a data packet arrives at one port, the hub will simply rebroadcast it to all ports that have devices linked to them. So, even if this computer just wanted to interact with this computer over here, the data would still be received by these other computers, even if it was not intended for them.

When this occurs, it not only raises security problems but also generates extra network traffic, burning bandwidth. Switches are similar to hubs in that they are both devices with many ports that accept ethernet connections from network devices. However, unlike a hub switch, this one is clever. A switch can learn the physical addresses of the devices connected to it and store them in a database called the MAC address.

So, unlike a hub, when a data packet is sent to a switch, it is only sent to the chosen target port, but a hub would just replay the data to all ports.

A computer in a network, for example, might desire to communicate with another computer linked to the same network via a switch. When a data packet arrives at the switch, the switch will search up the MAC address in its table of matching ports and transmit the data to the appropriate port. Then just that computer would get data packets. What are the main distinctions between a switch and a hub? As a result, switches are preferred over hubs because they reduce network traffic. In a nutshell, the hub identifies whether or not a device is physically linked to it. And because it maintains track of the MAC addresses of linked devices, the switch can detect individual devices. Within a (LAN) Local Area Network, hubs and switches are utilized to exchange data. For example, a home network or a commercial network. They aren't used to exchanging data with others outside their network, such as on the internet.

A device capable of reading IP addresses is required for this purpose.

The Router device was added to this list.

A switch courses or advances information starting with one network then onto the next dependent on the IP address. At the point when an information bundle shows up at the switch, it is analyzed for its IP address to decide if it is bound for its own organization or for another network. It will get it in case it is for them; in case it isn't, it will be directed to another network. Therefore, the switch goes about as the essential door for the organization. Thus, we build a private network with this switch.
