The new XGS Series hardware and the Sophos Firewall

With Sophos Firewall OS version 18.5, Sophos released the first new XGS Series next-generation firewall appliances.

This fully re-engineered hardware platform solves a common problem for network administrators: how to scale up security for today's highly diverse, distributed, and encrypted networks without throttling network efficiency.

The new XGS Series is sure to reshuffle the deck in the network firewall room, especially with its low price.

Here are only three of the new release's highlights.

Xstream-powered dual processor architecture

At the heart of any XGS Series appliance is a high-performance multi-core x86 CPU and an Xstream Flow processor, which intelligently accelerates applications by offloading security-verified and trusted traffic to the FastPath.

This architecture helps us to extend and scale security in the same way that strictly x86-based firewalls do, while still offering a performance boost that isn't limited by the limitations of certain legacy platform designs.

We may, for example, expand the offload capabilities in future software releases with the programmable Xstream Flow processors, offering additional performance improvements without modifying the hardware.

Performance and security

As much as we like to talk about speeds and feeds in the firewall world, the XGS Series' extra performance headroom serves a purpose: security.

Organizations are leaving massive blind spots in their network visibility by not enabling TLS inspection, with nearly 90% of network traffic encrypted and almost 50% of malware using TLS to escape detection.

According to Sophos’ data, approximately 90% of organisations do not have TLS inspection enabled on their firewalls. Even if we consider that some of them may have their own TLS inspection solutions, this is more likely to be the minority than the majority. Apart from the security danger, it's difficult to establish a strategy for traffic that appears as "general" or "unknown."

Before you all start screaming, "But TLS inspection destroys the internet," remember that Sophos Firewall has native support for TLS 1.3 and a user interface that clearly shows whether traffic has caused problems and how many users have been affected. You can block problematic pages and applications with only a few clicks without reverting to a less-than-adequate level of security. In terms of price per safe Mbps, the XGS Series provides a range of form factors that outperform many competitive models.

The high-speed interfaces on the XGS Series appliances are designed to meet the diverse networking needs of both large and small businesses.

Add-on modules offer the flexibility to adapt your computer connectivity to your particular environment – both today and in the future – in addition to the built-in copper, fibre, and a variety of other ports on any model.

Comtech as golden partners of sophos can help you to get all sophos benefits.
