Workstation and Desktop

Workstation and Desktop

Posted On Mar 3, 2021

This is always an interesting factor that most of us are unaware of the differences between Workstation and Desktop. Often both of them are interchanged and used. Lets have deep learn on the terms.

In general, a Desktop is any computer that can fit on top of a table or a desk. But a Workstation is used for high-end computers that are used for scientific or heavy usage applications.

Owners' needs such as Gaming, Word processing, as a media center are perfectly filled by Desktop computers. Workstations have a much bigger role to fulfill as they are intended to be used for CAD/CAM or for animations where the demands are really quite great. It is common for workstations to have multiple displays and even other input methods aside from the usual mouse and keyboard. The accessories that are attached to workstations are specific to the job that they perform while desktop computers tend to have a lot of accessories that are fully dependent on the discretion of the owner. These can range from high-quality speakers and mixers down to programmable keyboards and controllers.

Although they were initially separated by their specifications, this gap has now been almost closed as it is not uncommon to see personal computers that rival the specifications of workstations. The price between high and low-end components has also closed enough that most people who want the maximum performance for video processing or gaming can just dish out some extra cash. And computer parts manufacturers are more than willing to provide high-end components to those who can afford them regardless of their actual needs.

Summary:

1.Just about any computer qualifies as a desktop while a workstation is one that is being used in a work environment

2.Desktops are basically used for any purpose like gaming or word processing while workstations are used for CAD/CAM or animating

3.Traditionally, Workstations have much higher specifications than desktops and a much higher price tag

Now Features of Workstation can be postulated

• ECC RAM. Error-correcting code memory makes your system more reliable. It fixes memory errors before they affect your system, preventing crashes and saving you downtime.

• Multiple Processor Cores. More processor cores mean more processing abilities. However, it won’t guarantee performance boosts. The software you are using has to be programmed to take advantage of it, but it will provide some benefit.

• RAID (Redundant Array of Independent Disks). RAID uses multiple internal hard drives to store and process your data. There are several different types of RAID systems. Depending on the type of system, you can get multiple drives processing your data, or you can get mirrored drives, meaning that if one drive fails the other will still function.

• SSD. Solid State Drives work differently than conventional hard-disk drives. There are no moving parts, so there is less chance of a physical failure. They are also faster. The downside is that they are more expensive and have a smaller storage capacity than that of “regular” drives.

• Optimized GPU. All computers need to output to a screen. Having a higher-end GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) means that your CPU will have to do less work processing the screen output. In some cases, the GPU can actually take over some of the load from the CPU, making everything faster. The downside is that high-end GPUs are expensive.

Most of this is obvious: If you spend more, you get more. But is doubling your cost a good idea? Often the answer is yes. If you planned to spend a particularly small amount but now spend more than you expected, you naturally hope for twice as much. You need to ask yourself the following: How much time does it cost you in downtime and in time spent dealing with issues that come from underperforming computer hardware?

If it saves you 30 minutes a week over the course of three to six years (the average lifespan of an office computer), that adds up to 26 to 52 man-hours. Multiply that with your billing rate, and that is the money you are losing. That’s practically the entire cost of the workstation. Also, keep in mind that your employees will be much happier while they work if their equipment is more reliable and functions the way they expect it to. That alone will increase production.
