The Department of Radiation Oncology at Government Medical College, Kottayam, established in 1982, stands as the premier cancer institute in Central Kerala, serving patients from multiple districts including Kottayam, Idukki, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Ernakulam, and parts of Quilon. The department has a robust Cancer Care Centre inaugurated in 1992, and it recently expanded its services to include a palliative care clinic and Medical Oncology services. Additionally, Surgical Oncology has been available for the past four years. Annually, the department treats around 3500 new cancer patients and manages approximately 500,000 follow-up cases, with a daily outpatient attendance exceeding 300. Equipped with advanced facilities such as 2 Linear Accelerators, a 3D Computerized Treatment Planning System, a CT Simulator, Remote Afterloading HDR Brachytherapy, and a Mould room, the department offers comprehensive treatment options including teletherapy, HDR brachytherapy, chemotherapy, and immunotherapy. Modern techniques like IMRT and VMAT ensure precise and conformal treatment, prioritizing patient quality of life. The department supports a robust academic program, offering postgraduate training in Radiation Oncology with an annual intake of 2 students and providing cross-specialty training to students from surgery, gynecology, pharmacology, and nursing. The department also collaborates with Radiodiagnosis to conduct a three-year DRRT program with an annual intake of 15 students, supported by 15 experienced radiographers and 5 trainees. Additionally, the department maintains a hospital-based cancer registry.
