Forensic Medicine

The Forensic Medicine Department at Government Medical College, Kottayam has been operational since 1964, with Dr. Balaraman Nair serving as its first Head of Department. The department, which offers a postgraduate MD course in Forensic Medicine since 2010, comprises 6 faculty members, including a Professor & HOD, an Associate Professor, and 4 Assistant Professors, along with 6 residents. It handles a significant caseload of medicolegal work, including an average of 2000 postmortem examinations annually, followed by court appearances. The department also provides E-Sanjeevani telemedicine services and conducts teaching sessions for undergraduate and postgraduate students in a dedicated lecture hall equipped with projector facilities. Additionally, the department houses a museum and a library, supporting ongoing research with 4 to 5 projects led by the faculty and various thesis works by the residents. The department operates from 9 am to 4 pm on working days and 10 am to 4 pm on holidays.
