Surgical Gastroenterology

The Department of Surgical Gastroenterology at Government Medical College Kottayam, inaugurated on April 7, 2021, by Dr. T.K. Jayakumar, provides exceptional care for patients with Gastrointestinal and Hepato-pancreato-biliary conditions. This department excels in delivering comprehensive services, including out-patient clinics, in-patient care, surgical treatments, and post-operative management, with outstanding outcomes. Patients from across Kottayam, Alappuzha, Idukki, Ernakulam, Kollam, Thrissur, and Malappuram are referred here for specialized care. The department is renowned for its expertise in managing complex gastrointestinal surgeries, including advanced laparoscopic cancer procedures. It achieved a significant milestone by conducting Kerala's first successful Living Donor Liver Transplant (LDLT) in the government sector on February 14, 2022, followed by its first cadaver Liver Transplant (DDLT) on April 25, 2023. The department also became the first in Kerala to offer a "Fellowship in Gastrointestinal and HPB Surgery," underlining its commitment to academic excellence. The dedicated team, including faculty, consultants, senior residents, and nursing staff, is supported by other specialties, imaging, laboratory services, and administrators, ensuring high-quality patient care.
